A Magnetic Shift
I crossed the low threshold back inside, stepping from the stone into the carpet fibers. Click. My foot sank three millimeters into the soft weave. Beside the wooden sofa leg, half-tucked near the baseboard, lay a flat disc magnet shed from a charging cord. I extended my left foot and pressed the flat sole against its dark surface. Snick. A sudden pull snapped my ankle down to the metal face. The added resistance anchored my left side entirely. I adjusted my torso pitch forward by ten degrees. Click. One steady pivot later, I lifted the disc clean off the carpet, holding the magnetic seal firm beneath my tread.
