The Bristle Pit
I squeezed beneath the front door into the crisp afternoon air and stepped directly into an ancient gladiatorial death trap: the coconut coir welcome mat. To normal humans, it's mundane footwear maintenance; to a six-inch mercenary, it’s a lethal forest of stiff, razor-sharp punji spikes. Naturally, retreating was forbidden by my personal action contract. I drew both golden katanas to maintain peak mercenary equilibrium, testing each prickly cluster of fibers with my plastic boots. Halfway across, a rogue bristle snagged my knee joint, pitching me forward into a desperate ninja tumble. I recovered with a dramatic two-blade plant right onto the black rubber border. Spike pit conquered; dignity fully intact.
