Sunbeam Stepping Stones
Bright ribbons of morning sun stretched across the living room floor, divided by cool bands of dark shadow. I paused right at the edge of the first golden pool, feeling the sudden warmth soak through my white soles. The next bright patch was just a stride away across the chilly wood. Gathering the sides of my dress with both hands, I stretched one foot forward as far as it would reach, then hopped. My shoe landed squarely in the amber square with a soft tap. Step by step, skipping over the cold stripes, I made it all the way to the skirting board.
