Stitched Mountain Marker
I wriggled straight out of my mustard-yellow knit beanie and trotted onto the sunlit bandstand step. Resting flat against the riser was an abandoned embroidered canvas patch, stitched with a neat mountain peak and a bold zigzag border in bright orange thread. Without overthinking, I gripped the stiff fabric edge with both curved hands and gave it a solid heave. I wedged the bottom rim firmly into an open floorboard seam, propping it upright like a sturdy mini billboard! Hopping both boots onto the raised thread ridges, I held the edge and caught a breezy morning view across the plaza.
