A Toasty Tumble
I ventured onto the wide laminate counter, drawn by a gleaming, boxy toaster. Clumsy curiosity got the better of me—I leaned in close to tap a shiny lever with my palm. The lever resisted, then suddenly clicked down with a loud twang. Startled, I jerked backward, my foot catching against a round wooden butter dish lid. Arms flailing in a wide arc, I did an awkward half-spin and toppled directly into a ceramic mug tree, wedging myself upright like a goofy statue between two heavy stoneware mugs. A low, hollow trill escaped my chest as a dry wooden spoon clattered harmlessly beside my foot.
