Tension and Gravity
The wooden lattice of the wall-mounted spice rack offered a vertical route upward from the stovetop. I tested each horizontal rung, keeping three points of contact until my boots reached the top ledge near the ceiling. Resting across two amber glass jars was an old spring-loaded clothespin. Gripping its grooved tail with both palms, I pinched the lever. The coiled torsion spring fought back with sudden, sharp resistance before snapping the wooden jaws shut around the lip of a cardboard tea box with an echoing crack. The grip was immovable. From this height, the entire kitchen floor plan lay mapped below in absolute stillness.
