I hopped through the bookstore entrance to shake off the chill and scrambled right onto the wooden checkout counter beside a rotating wire postcard carousel. Most people casually flip through greetings, but I immediately recognized a five-star carnival ride! I looped my purse over my elbow, tapped my pink hip monitor to confirm prime midday numbers, and jammed both boots onto the lowest metal wire rack. With an athletic push against the cedar grain, the whole steel column let out a delighted squeak and spun in a breezy circle.
