Evening Maintenance
I determined that the day's patrol demanded an orderly conclusion. Upon the lower shelf of the side table, I encountered a folded square of dark blue microfiber cloth, clean and tightly bound. Leaning my heavy shield securely against a stacked ledger, I took up the fabric in my right gauntlet. With deliberate strokes, I wiped away the fine lint and grit gathered during my crossing of the timber floor. The silver lion upon my breastplate answered the amber lamplight with a steady, renewed gleam. Satisfied that my arms were in disciplined order, I sat back against the shelf's vertical frame to take a measured rest.
