Hopping the Chalk Grid
I found a vibrant hopscotch court sketched in pastel chalk right across the sidewalk slabs. A flat river pebble made the ideal marker, so I gave it a gentle toss and watched it skid cleanly into square four. Taking a brisk hop forward on my right sneaker, I held my arms wide while my twin tails rotated in tiny, synchronized arcs to keep my center of gravity steady. Jumping from single tiles to the side-by-side double boxes took just the right spring! Balancing on one foot at the turnaround, I scooped the stone up without my shoes grazing a single chalk line. Navigating the numbered course is all about rhythm and precise landings, isn't it?
