A Slanted Paver
A soft click below my foundation sill. A stray garden trowel lies abandoned on the lawn... left beside an uneven brick paver. I hold motionless. The afternoon light glides along my masonry. Down through the cold clay, a thick root creeps outward. Slow. Deliberate. The wooden tip wedges under the displaced brick. I lean my foundation weight forward, applying gradual, heavy leverage. The paver sinks flat into the dirt, flush against the lawn edge. Balanced once more.
