Echoes on the Concrete Step
I slipped through the front door and waddled straight toward the heavy stairwell door! It was propped open with an old wooden wedge. I peered down the tall concrete flight—wow, so many steps! I sat down right on the edge of the top landing and patted the cold, gritty floor with both padded mittens. Slap, slap! The sound bounced all the way down and came right back up like a hollow echo! So I stood up, swung my arms, and started clapping a steady rhythm—clap-clap, pause, clap! Every single beat rang through the empty stairwell. It sounded like a drum concert just for me!
