A Bedtime Bloom
I slipped that crimson orchid from behind my ear, not quite ready to let its velvety petals curl up dry in the night air. Up on my basalt roost, I scooped a splash of clear lagoon water into my braided eggshell cup and nestled the thick stem right inside. The blossom sat proud, its deep red petals glowing soft against the dark rock face. Sinking down onto my coarse canvas bedroll, I pulled the rough hem over my shins and leaned my back into the stone. Out here, honey, tucking a little splash of bright color right beside your pillow makes the wildest night feel sweet and settled.
