The gap beneath the porch screen door offered direct egress to the outside. Parked along the brick wall, a commuter bicycle stood like an intricate steel tower. I jumped onto the ridged pedal and scaled my way onto the rear derailleur cage. A dense cassette of steel cogs spiraled upward, linked by a heavy chain. Bracing my boots against the rear axle nut, I gripped an exposed chain link with my right hand and pushed downward. The derailleur spring flexed under the load, yielding with firm mechanical resistance before snapping back into true alignment. A robust kinetic drive system, fully operational.
