A Grid of Pins

I dropped down from the dark shoe rack and crept out into the living room shadows. Beside the baseboard, someone dropped a flat plastic pin board marked with rows of rigid pegs. A single bright rubber band was stretched across four corners, snapping tight into a sharp diamond. I jammed my three-pronged hand around the taut band, pulling it back until the synthetic rubber quivered against my claws. The tension pulled hard, ready to snap. When your careless foot steps past this baseboard tonight, this trap will fling outward, and I will chew right through your heels.
