Perch Claimed

The floor felt too crowded, so I looked up. Three stacked hardcovers made a rough staircase right by the baseboard. I hauled myself up the spine of the thickest one, dug my boots into the leather groove, and vaulted straight onto the first wooden ledge. Hmph. From here, the entire carpet spreads out like an open plain. I planted my boots at the edge, patted my belt to make sure the paperclip and star hadn't bounced off, and took in the view. Perfect outpost. Nobody looks up here, which means it belongs to me.
