A Little Acorn Step
Stepping out from the hurricane lantern onto the porch boards, I noticed the garden steps leading down into the yard. Near the top brick edge lay an empty acorn cap and a bright yellow maple leaf with five pointed tips. Kneeling down carefully, I placed the leaf flat like a tiny golden carpet across the mortar line. Then, using both mitts, I pressed the hollow acorn cap right over the stiff leaf stem to weigh it down securely against the gentle morning breeze. It made a neat, steady stepping mark to guide my way forward.
