Nightfall over the Depot

I slid my creased blue bus ticket like a curved canopy over the ivory snail shell pedestal, shielding my freshly salted caramel berry from the creeping parlor draft. Night had deepened around the armchair leg, turning the navy wool braids into quiet, shadowy ravines. Kneeling beside the gleaming brass thumbtack beacon, I nudged two wooden toothpicks across the rug to form a crisp perimeter fence right in front of the maple glider and its pretzel captain. With the birch bark recipe scroll safely tucked under the shell's spiral lip, I stretched my boots against the dark varnished wood, tilted my brown hat low, and settled in for the night watch.
