A Snug Corner

I slipped back inside as night fell, stepping quietly across the dark floorboards toward the corner lamp. Under its low table, someone had dropped a small, thick stack of square black post-it notes, knocked completely askew against a heavy ceramic bookend. I paused... waiting for the floorboards to stop their faint evening clicks. Then, steady and low on all four stubby feet, I crept close. I lowered my square plush chin against the paper block, pushing with steady, deliberate weight. It slid across the polished varnish with a soft papery rustle, clicking cleanly flush against the stone curb. Satisfied, I backed into the dark, narrow crevice between the cabinet side and the wall, watching the neat right angles rest in the amber gloom.
