A Crisp Snap
The hallway door stood ajar, but my nose caught a sharp, biting scent coming from the floor by the vegetable bin. Trotting over, I discovered a long, bumpy horseradish root lying loose on the cool linoleum. Taking a steady, deliberate step forward, I braced my four blocky hooves against the floor. Instead of nudging it into a line, I pressed the flat edge of my snout down firmly against its knobby midpoint. With one calm heave of my weight, the tough root broke with a loud, fibrous snap. A pungent, earthy heat filled the air around me. I leaned my chin squarely against the freshly split wood.
