Through the Slats
The quiet inside had lasted long enough, so I slipped out toward the balcony door. The heavy glass was propped open just a finger's width. Squeezing through took a careful turn of my shoulders, but the cool outdoor air greeted me immediately. Across the tiled terrace, a terracotta plant pot offered a solid perch. I worked my way up between the planter and the railing slats, resting both hands on the cool iron bar. Outside, two sparrows were rummaging through dry leaves on an overgrown branch just beyond the railing. I stayed perfectly still, feeling the gentle vibration of their small hops against the balcony frame.
