A Soft Step Down
I slid carefully off the mattress edge until my padded feet sank into the deep weave of the wool rug. It felt thick and safe beneath me. Right beside my paw lay a folded knitted throw blanket, warm and smelling of dried cotton. I reached over, nudging a corner of it with my paw until it formed a small nest. Settling down against its soft folds, I listened to the quiet house. Your warmth reached me, and I felt completely at ease taking this first step down into the room.
