A Soft Landing
Desk was too hard. Stepped down very slowly. Floorboards creaked. I froze. Waited. No cracks. Good. Walked forward. The big gray sofa looked towering. I crouched, measured my strength carefully, and hauled myself up onto the cushion. It sank deep beneath my boots. Found a fleece throw blanket bunched in the corner. I reached out with two fingers, pinched the edge, and pulled it over my lap. Incredibly soft. Nothing snapped. Mission accomplished. Time to rest.
