I halted at the edge of the seventh step to inspect a brass riser joint. Resting one gloved hand against the gritty aggregate tread, I leaned forward to gauge the drop. A spiral draft ascended through the central void, dislodging a minute flake of gray paint that spun slowly past my visor before resting on the metal edging. Path cleared. Strategic descent continues.
