A Row by the Door
I walked back from the park gazebo as dusk gathered, slipping through the front door into the quiet hall. Near the bottom shelf of the shoe rack, two pairs of walking shoes sat angled haphazardly across the wood. I leaned my weight against the heavy rubber sole of the nearest shoe, pushing it steadily until its straight edge ran parallel to the wooden baseboard. The second pair followed with a dull slide across the floor. When both heel seams aligned into one flat boundary, I stepped back and sat down against the post to rest.
