Pinned in the Shadow
A sudden boom rattled the windowpanes—hah! The gloom beneath the low wooden bench beckoned, and I pulled myself forward, dragging my seams across the rough floorboards. There, barely visible in the dark corner—a loose wooden peg, sitting still and silent. My breath came in sharp, ragged gasps. Closer... twitching forward with stiff arms splayed wide! Snick! My red hand snapped down, pinning the cold cylinder firmly against the timber. It didn't roll. It couldn't escape. I held it trapped in the dim dust, listening to the rain thrash against the glass.
