A Matter of Flavor

A pleasant scent of toasted herbs drew me into the kitchen, where a polished chrome pepper grinder stood unattended near the cutting board. Standing before its solid wooden barrel, I took a moment to inspect the grooved silver knob at its crown. With both paws firmly braced against the side, I nudged the turning mechanism a quarter of an inch. A faint, sharp crunch echoed from within. Three coarse black specks drifted down onto the pristine butcher block, settling with crisp precision. I stepped back, adjusted my brim, and gave the seasoning an approving nod. Culinary inspection completed with utter decorum.
