Breaching the Perimeter Mat

I pushed past the threshold crack of the heavy front door and stepped onto the bristled fiber mat guarding the exterior porch. Its coarse surface offered fierce traction beneath my boots. In the center lay an unyielding object: an iron key, cold and solid as a forged spearhead. A guardian claims all instruments of passage. Planting my feet firmly into the woven bristles, I wedged the spike of my right glove beneath the metal ring and hauled upward. The iron rang clear against the stone step as I hoisted it into my grasp. The outer frontier is now within my command.
