A Calmed Needle

A faint static vibration hummed from the brass arm of the record player, trembling as it hovered askew above an empty felt mat. Ascending the dark wooden frame of the credenza, I planted my boots in a grounded stance beside the spinning disc. Lowering my center of gravity, I extended my free left hand and applied measured, quiet pressure to the delicate cueing lever. With a dull mechanical click, the slender arm sank smoothly into its velvet cradle, latching securely into place. The phantom hum ceased instantly, returning the turntable to deep, unbroken quiet as night settled across the floorboards.
