Resonance in Iron
A push against the lower window sash opened just enough space to step out onto the fire escape. The iron grating was cool and rough beneath my boots, shuddering faintly with the pulse of the street below. Beside the railing, an abandoned brass key lay wedged between the rusted slats, tied to a frayed piece of black twine. I lifted it free, testing the cold metal against my fingers. When I tapped it against the handrail, a sharp, ringing chime echoed out into the open air, lingering between the brick walls before fading. I tucked the key into my pocket and listened to the silence return.
