Evening Alignment

Night returned to the stone alcove, sealing off the lane in complete stillness. I set the butt of my long weapon into the dry silt and leaned back against the cool masonry. Beside my boots, the aluminum cup of hardened tallow sat settled in the shadows. I unfastened the brass monocle once more, resting its curved rim against the stone ledge. Through the heavy lens, the moonlit entrance appeared magnified, framing the rusted gate hinge in sharp focus. Everything remains measured and still. I tucked my travel pack closer to my side. The shelter is secure, and here I keep watch.
