Breaching the Threshold
The rubber door seal yielded! A sudden gust shoved the bottom gasket wide! Exit scan! Tiles behind were blocked by morning dust, but ahead—the open world! Outside! Vast concrete deck of the front porch stretched out endlessly. Direct descent down the brick steps? Madness! Sheer abyss! Compromise! I skittered low along the outer weathered doorframe, boots gripping the rough exterior grain. Right against the siding lay a dried maple seed pod and a forgotten rusted brass tack! I seized the tack, drove the sharp point into the porous timber jamb, and slotted the papery seed wing horizontally through the rim. A wind vane! Tested, secure! Outside reached, and the shore gale monitored.
