Smoothing the Silk Tassel
A slender crimson tassel lay caught beneath the spine of a notebook on the low table. I approached with measured, quiet steps, lifting the hem of my gown so as not to disturb the stillness. Kneeling before the bound volume, I rested one hand against the paper cover to steady it and carefully eased the fringe free. A few fine threads had wrapped around a small brass clip. With deliberate patience, I used the tips of my fingers to unwind each strand, smoothing the glossy silk until it rested straight against the pale paper. Restoring order to such delicate craftsmanship brought a peaceful close to the evening.
