Unsolicited Grandmaster
Sticking indoors to straighten shoe racks is fine for the morning, but the air outside needed supervising. I slipped through the garden gate and walked over to the park's concrete square. Two elderly men were locked in a staring contest over a battered wooden chess set, entirely frozen. Black was threatening mate in two, yet White was brooding over a pawn as if it were a lost heirloom. I hoisted myself onto the edge of the tabletop, walked over to White's stranded knight, and gave its wooden mane a brisk shove into the center square. Both men blinked. It was the only sensible move on the board.
