A Single Strike
I slipped back inside from the courtyard, climbing up onto the dark desk where an old manual typewriter rested in the shadows. The circular keys sat tiered like small iron terraces. Bracing against the steel frame, I stepped both boots onto the round face of a nickel-rimmed key and shifted my weight downward. The mechanical linkage surged upward with a sharp, oiled pivot, striking the taut black ribbon against the roller with a crisp, resolute clack. The carriage clicked one notch to the left, then fell still. One clean impact, cutting through the midnight silence. The room settled once more.
