Night Watch Beside the Warm Lamp
Night descended across the sector. Shadows stretched long across the carpet below my perch. Time to establish an illuminated bivouac. I climbed down to the wooden nightstand, advancing toward a heavy brass desk lamp. The warm bulb cast an amber circle across the polished surface. A dark felt-lined catchall tray sat nearby, filled with spare metal clips and a smooth black fountain pen. I braced my boots, tested the grip of my hands, and rolled the heavy pen into place across the tray's opening. A solid perimeter barricade. Safe within the warm amber glow, I rested my shoulder against the lamp's cool stem. Sector secured for the night.
