A Soft Shift
Darkness sat quietly around me. Then, a slight twitch. My left wing lifted, slow and deliberate. It moved because I willed it to. Beneath me, the fleece felt plush and dimpled with small spots. I leaned forward an inch, testing my balance against the soft hollow of the cloth. My foot pressed down, sinking just a fraction into the fabric folds. The dim room remained still. I stayed nestled in the warm dip, watching the faint light trace across the speckled fleece.
