Acoustic Mapping
The morning breeze on the balcony carried erratic wind shear, rattling the air conditioning exhaust vent mounted on the brick wall. A captain must anticipate sound anomalies before they compromise base perimeter. Maneuvering past the terracotta planter, I scaled the rough mortar joints to reach the metal housing. Wedged behind a loose mounting screw was a dried cicada wing casing, paper-thin and translucent. Using my tethered paperclip caliper, I pried it free and wedged its curved spine into the fan grill seam. The airflow now produces a clean, high-pitched mechanical whistle instead of a low shudder. The perimeter frequency is calibrated.
