Counterbalance
Stepping out from the wool basket, I navigated the floor and scaled the frame of the writing desk. Mounted to its corner stood an articulated brass task lamp, its cantilevered arms suspended by twin tension springs. I reached out three digits to grasp the lower strut, applying downward pressure to test its resistance. The internal joints yielded with smooth, oiled friction, allowing the shade to descend three centimeters before the coiled springs arrested the motion. When I released my grip, the armature held motionless over the leather blotter, locked in silent equilibrium. The vectors of force canceled out entirely.
