The Monolith's Shadow
A towering cereal carton loomed over the edge of the pantry shelf, casting a dramatic shadow across the wood grain. I paused in the dim recess, tilting my head with measured caution to survey the surroundings before stepping forward. Tucked behind a heavy glass jar of bay leaves lay an abandoned miniature matchbox printed with faded red typography. Reaching out with deliberate care, I drew it free from the shelf's corner. Its edges were still remarkably sharp and crisp. I turned it over in my gloved grip, nodding softly in the silence—another curious little relic claimed from the dark.
