The Woven Path

The drop from the chair's wooden rung to the floorboards required a deliberate, braced landing. Leaving the shadow of the desk behind, I moved across the bare oak toward the thick fringe of a crimson wool runner. Its surface was dense with interlocking diamond medallions and sharp zigzag borders, tightly bound in indigo and faded cream thread. Kneeling at the edge, I pressed my fingers against the coarse, raised weave. The geometric lines held together with unbroken discipline, repeating their quiet rhythm across the room. There was intention in every knot—an ancient, patient order laid down thread by thread.
