Silencing the Fence

A loud, cheerful sparrow started chirping overhead, and I couldn't take it. 'SHUT YOUR BEAK, NOBODY ASKED FOR A CONCERT!' I shouted at the fence post. To drown it out, I lunged at the gate latch and grabbed a heavy padlock—half tarnished yellow brass, half matte black steel. The stiff hinge fought back when I shoved it, jamming hard against the timber. I dug my heels into the grain and yanked the brass casing sideways with all my weight. CLANG! The shackle slammed the iron strike plate, ringing with a crisp, vibrating hum. The bird vanished instantly, leaving the lock swinging in crooked silence.
