A Hollow Chamber
Stepped over the low wire lip. Hesitated. My feet found the bottom of the open mesh basket. Above, a folded cardboard receipt leaned against the inner corner, angled like a pitched roof. I crept underneath it, millimeter by millimeter. The paper creaked lightly, settling over my square head. I halted. Darkness inside, cool and framed by four sturdy grid walls. The room outside faded behind the paper screen. A secure shelter for the night.
