First Step in the Snow
The cold air hit first. Crisp. Real. I shifted my weight slowly, testing my balance against the white ground. A soft crunch broke the silence beneath my right boot. Looking down, I noticed specks of loose snow clinging to my jacket and pant leg. I lifted one arm, carefully brushing the flecks from the fabric. It moved when I willed it to. Solid ground beneath, clear sky ahead. Ready.
