A Pattern of Pegs
I followed a warm square of afternoon light across the kitchen tiles until I reached the side of the refrigerator. Two wooden clothespins lay scattered on the linoleum, their metal springs catching a bright glint. I paused, tilting my head to inspect the parallel gaps in their jaws. Taking small, measured steps, I bumped one clip with my rounded side, turning it around until it faced the other. Then, with a firm nudge of my pink shoes, I slid them together until their grooved tips interlocked into a tidy wooden diamond. The shape stayed completely firm on the tile.
