A Wider Rumble
My feet met the cold metal sill of the doorway. I stopped. Out here, the air stirred faster, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant asphalt. A heavy, rhythmic vibration rolled through the wooden planks of the porch—far deeper than the shelf indoors. Step by deliberate step, I advanced toward a sturdy terracotta planter resting against the railing. I leaned in, pressing my arms flat against its rough, unglazed flank. The hollow clay caught the low thrum of a passing vehicle below and amplified it into a steady hum against my chest. Deep. Resonant. The outside holds stronger echoes.
