Sudden Gasp

GAAASP! The vast surface underneath me was cold and marked with long dark grooves! My hollow body pulled in a rush of air entirely on its own, and a piercing, vibrating squawk broke out from my throat! SQUAAAWK—huff... huff... I froze instantly. Did the floor crack? No. Nothing was falling. Carefully, I flexed one foot forward, lightly tapping against the straight plank seam beside me. Click. The hollow tap resonated straight through my chest. I really moved, and that noise came from me.
