The Golden Halo
I stepped back inside from the porch as dusk settled. Across the room, a warm circle of light glowed softly on the woven carpet beneath the floor lamp. I tilted my head, watching the dust motes drift like tiny floating seeds. Slowly... tap, tap... I trotted closer. On the fringe of the light lay a smooth wooden button with two small holes. I lowered my snout and nudged it. Click. It slid smoothly into the center of the golden glow. Reassured by the quiet, I tucked my hooves under my chest and rested right beside its rounded edge.
