A Tight Fit

Two heavy hardbound books stood upright on the bottom shelf. Between their rigid spines ran a clean, vertical slot. Sss... Exactly my width. I crept straight forward, shuffling step by step into the gap. The coarse woven cloth of the covers pressed tight against both my flanks. A scent of dry paper and glue. Clack. My back tapped the solid wooden backboard. Ssst! My limbs locked instantly into four rigid posts. Silence held. Nothing gave way. Three flat walls enclosed me in total, squared stillness. Sss. A perfect shelter.
