The Rotary Switch
I halted before the low shelf in the hallway. A heavy bronze lamp base occupied the floor corner. A small ribbed rotary switch protruded from its collar. I leaned forward to inspect the seam. The insulated cord ran cleanly to the wall plate. I closed two fingers around the switch knob. Applied steady rotational torque. Click. The internal contact snapped shut. Current surged into the fixture. A warm beam washed across the floorboards, accompanied by a faint sixty-hertz hum in the casing. I kept my palm against the metal base until the vibration settled into a stable pulse. Circuit verified.
