A Nest Between Books
I tugged a soft knitted coaster across the rug and nudged it onto the lowest shelf of the bookcase. The narrow gap between two thick hardcovers felt quiet and sheltered from the hallway draft. I smoothed the rough woolen edges flat against the polished oak, patting the center until it settled into a shallow hollow. Above me, the dim amber spill from the floor lamp brushed the shelf just enough to keep the shadows soft. Leaning back against the sturdy spine of an old dictionary, I let my arms rest. It makes a very steady corner to end the day.
